July 2005
5th XPlex Championship at XPLEX Las Vegas
XPLEX held its fifth race of the 2005 race season with unseasonably hot weather, even for Vegas, and it was a highly competitive affair.
The field was larger than previous races with all those attending braving the 115 degree temperatures.
The racing started with the Junior 1 class.
This is usually one of the most competitive groups and this day was no exception. It was also the largest class of the day with nine competitors ranging in age from 8 to 12 years young.
Just over two seconds separated the competitors in the qualifying session. Jeremiah Wagner took the pole for the heat followed closely by
Maya Gutierrez and Roman Lagudi.
The heat race was won by Larry Thomas, who came from the fifth starting position. Jeremiah Wagner
finished the heat first, but was disqualified for being a few pounds toolight. In the main race Larry Thomas
held off Maya Gutierrez and Roman Lagudi, who had to use a borrowed motor. Jeremiah Wagner finished fourth after starting last.
The next class to race was Rotax Junior.
This class always has a great turnout and is every time the race of the day to watch. Dusty Davis
had a wire to wire win, taking first place in the qualifying, heat, and main event. While Dusty was never really challenged on this day, XPLEX saw another one of our local racers make great strides:
Joshua Gustat fought his way from the last starting spot in the main to finish second over Roger Scott.
Than came the 125cc Shifters.
These monster karts are the fastest karts available and are awesome to watch. This day belonged to Mark Pollard.
Mark Pollard ran his 250 with the 125s and obviously was untouchable. Dave Fultz and Marc Segal went back and forth with each other during the heat and main in their 125s, with Marc taking the prize over
Dave in the main.
Rotax Internationals and Rotax Masters were next up on the grid.
Both of these classes were missing a few drivers but it was still an exciting set of racers.
In the qualifying session,“Team Pink” of Zach Woodsford and Mike Herda took the pole and second position respectively.Dan Ferrell
had the best qualifying time of the Masters. During the heat race, Sean Gilmartin began his march to the top of the podium. After starting third in the heat, he finished second and then took the top spot over
Mike Herda and Mike Abbate during the main.
The Masters was won by Sammy Valafar.
This is absolutely amazing considering he did not even run in the heat race because of motor problems. Starting last, he was able to past and hold off Albert Lewis and Dan Ferrell for the win.
Overall it was a great evening of racing despite the heat.
The next exciting race will be held
at the XPLEX on
Saturday, August 13. Gates open at 4 pm

June 2005
XPLEX held its fourth race of the 2005 season.
The race was held in beautiful weather of the late afternoon and early evening.
The racing began with the Rotax Masters because we all know these guys need to get their beauty sleep. Conrad Corona (KartNr.8) had drop out due to heat exhaustion after the qualifying session. The Masters
class had the largest field and it was a great race in both the heat and main event. When the smoke cleared after the main event, Trent Regan had taken top honors followed by Mark Anderson, only 1.495
seconds off of the pace. Dan Ferrell placed third.
The next class to race was Junior 1, kids 8-12 years old.
This class always has a great turnout and is usually the race of the day to watch. Larry Thomas had a wire to wire win, taking first place in the qualifying, heat, and main event. While Larry was never really challenged
on this day, XPLEX saw one of the up and coming local racers show her potential: Carmyn Schottmuller fought her way from the third starting spot in the main to finish second over Hailey Vasquez from
Bullhead City, AZ.
Next up were the 125cc Shifters.
These monster karts are the fastest karts available and they are awesome to watch. This day belonged to Dave Fultz. Dave finally cracked the top of the podium with a first place finish. He had finished either second
or third in each of the previous races. It was a tight race in the main event with Dave winning by only 1.035 seconds over Richard Luchette.Ken Coombs finished 3rd with a gap of 0:50.295sec.
Rotax Juniors
were next up on the grid. This class was missing a few racers due to maintenance problems with their karts but it was still an exciting set of racers. In the qualifying session, the four racers all qualified within .469 seconds of
each other. The XPLEX-sponsored kart of Roger Scott took first place in both the heat and main event. Joshua Gustat finished 2nd place with a gap of 13.492sec. The real story for this class was the
clear improvement of Jackie Weiss. She finally has a podium finish under her belt, taking third this day. Jackie has gotten better consistently in each of her only four races.
The final event involved the Rotax Internationals.
These guys can really get around the track and put on some of the most aggressive racing ever seen. Josh Fultz was the guy to beat this day; no one could. He took top honors in all three contests, but it wasn’t easy.
He had to hold off the hard charging Zach Woodsford all day. Zach finished second in the main event by only .529 seconds. Sean Gilmartin finished third only .151 seconds out of second place.
